Facebook has rolled out yet another Security feature for those looking to be safe online. This is an opt-in feature meaning, you will have to manually set this up yourself. The Login Approval feature will allow require you to enter a code that is texted to your personal cell phone when you are logging into an unrecognized computer. This prevents people trying to hack into your account from a computer that Facebook does not recognize to be your own.
Have you ever logged into Facebook from a friend’s house and it asks you to name the computer you are logging in with? During this process Facebook allows you to save those familiar computers that you often use to access your Facebook account.
If you or someone else ever tries to log in from a computer that Facebook does not recognize you generally get an email with a little note saying that someone from “Name of Computer” has just logged into your account.
With this new feature the security gets even better – by providing your cell phone number Facebook can send you a text message with your very own code every time you or someone else tries to log into Facebook without a verified account.
You may be wondering…what if I lose my phone? Simple. Just log into Facebook from a previously-recognized computer (ie- your home computer, work computer etc) and regain your account & change your phone number. Its important to note that this only works with mobile phones – if you do no receive text messages on your phone then this feature does not work.
To get started you will need to log into your Facebook account via computer and select Account at the top right corner.
Then select Account Settings > Scroll down to Account Security > Check the box called ‘Login Approvals’> Follow the guided directions
This security feature seems a bit tedious to some, and if you may find the process a bit exhausting if you access Facebook from multiple locations. However, if you are having issues with keeping your account secure the added steps and security may be worth the extra hassle.
